Here at Screen-Tec, we like to keep customers in the loop when it comes to repairs and replacements. We’ve put together this handy infographic so you understand exactly what we mean, should your technician use any of the terminology below. Act fast and a chip on your windscreen is easily repairable at minimal cost. Leave it alone and it might grow to become a crack. Here’s how to identify a windscreen chip or crack.

Types of Chips and Cracks

Here are the common types of chip or crack that can be repaired. If the chip or crack is sizeable, however, the whole windscreen will need replacing for safety reasons.

Bullseye Crack

A bullseye crack is caused by a strike from a circular object like a stone or pebble. It’s called this because it resembles a dartboard with several concentric circles radiating from a single point.

Chip

Chips are the most common form of windscreen damage. They are characterised by small pieces of glass coming off the windscreen which leaves a sharp indentation in the glass.

Combination Break

A combination break can be any number of chips or cracks in one single place on the windscreen. This is a very serious type of windscreen damage and needs to be corrected as soon a possible.

Edge Crack

This type of crack is so named because it will appear within 2 inches of the edge of your windscreen. Edge cracks will often worsen as you drive over bumps and potholes.

Floater Crack

Floater cracks are more common in the middle of the windscreen and look like a crack with a chip in the middle.

Half Moon Crack

A halfmoon crack is semi-circular or crescent shaped. It is similar to a bullseye crack except that the circle of the crack is incomplete.

Stress Crack

Uneven pressure on the windscreen or dramatic temperature changes will deform the windscreen to the point where a stress crack forms.

Star Break

A single point of impact with small cracks leading from the centre means that you have a star break.

Repair vs Replacement

It depends on four factors as to whether your windscreen needs to be repaired or replaced. Namely size, depth, type and location will determine the course of action that needs to be taken.

A professional windscreen technician will be able to advise you. Call us to receive the best windscreen replacement quotes, as this varies depending on the make and model of the vehicle. Windscreen chip repairs are typically £65 + VAT, per chip.
